Edge Elite Sports and Edge Body Boot Camp

We would like to extend a big thank you to Edge Body Boot Camp and Edge Elite Sports for coming to visit our class this morning.  Andy and Cristin were able to follow up our nutrition lesson from yesterday with a lot of beneficial information about eating properly and exercising.  Andy talked about the importance of eating right, and fueling your body after a work out.  Students need to be doing at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day and eating a balanced diet.  This really hit home with a lot of our weight lifting students who are building their muscles with Coach Matthews.  Following a workout, you need to replinish your body with healthy foods.  A lot of people like to eat candy, and Andy explored with the students other sugar options, like fruit, to satisfy your sweet tooth.  Andy and Cristin demonstrated several exercises the students can do and the students even tried some.  We also had some staff volunteers to try out some exercises, and I of course demonstrated my favorite....bicycle crunches.  The students were interested in continuing to learn more about exercise and the programs Edge offers.  If you would like to learn more, Edge Fit is located on Frederica Street by Big Lots and the phone number is (270) 240-1382.  Again, thank you Andy and Cristin for all your helpful information and motivating the students to become healthier.  Check out some of our pictures below and a short video of the students trying some exercises!

Wacky Wednesday - Nutrition

Today during Wacky Wednesday we explored nutrition.  Boy was it hard to narrow down a topic on this!!!  We started with a good look at the food pyramid and what groups we are suppose to get our primary nutrition from.  Then we discussed sugars.  As a group we measured out the amount of sugar in the common drinks and foods the students like to eat.  The students are staff, including myself, were all shocked about the amount of sugar we are eating.  We also did some comparison of food labels.  For example, the Nature Valley granola bar was bigger but had less sugar than the Quaker Oats granola bar.  Of course, if we are eating healthy we need to eat more foods that are grown, like fruits and vegetables, and less things made in factories.  We discussed preservatives in factory food and watched a short video about what happened to McDonald's food over the course of 10 weeks.  It was so gross!!!!  I'll post a link below as well as some pictures.
